If the ultra left abandons President Obama, these two proselytizing pompous pastors-in-waiting will be our next president and vice president. Think about that and then think about not voting for President Obama.

School vouchers. Abortion outlawed. Civil rights tossed aside. English-only enforced across the nation. Gay men and women forcibly discharged from the military. Muslims targeted for harrassment. Evangelical christianity becomes the law of the land. I'm too weary from thinking about it to go on.

Why do you think the conservatives keep chalking up marks in the win column? They stick together. They compromise and reach consensus for their greater good. You know they are loving every single fucking minute of our infighting. It's exactly what they want.

Conservatives have no intention of working with President Obama. None at all. He will stick to his ideals and continue to try to work with them because he believes the ultimate result will be of benefit. Maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong. But he sticks to his principles as much as can any politician in the cesspool that is Washington, D.C. AND THAT'S WHY WE FUCKING ELECTED HIM.

Then-Senator Obama inspired us in 2008. He made US feel like we mattered. He actually made us smile, made us feel hopeful. We were joyful and we rejoiced. We have to hang onto that. Neither he nor we knew how bad the shit was gonna hit the fan. Bush, et al, did their jobs well. They nailed what may be the last nail in the coffin of democracy and freedom from tyranny.

I am saddened that I have not been able to enjoy President Obama's presidency. I'm not happy about the continued clusterfuck over DADT. I despise Tim Geithner and can't for the life of me understand why President Obama made him Treasury Secretary. I don't understand why President Obama keeps Ben Bernanke on as chair of the fed. Hell, I don't even know why the fuck we need the fed!! We DON'T need the fed. Hillary has been anything but a decent mensch. And don't get me started on Pelosi and Reid. They seemed more like deer in the headlights that effective leaders.

REMEMBER THE SUPERMAJORITY? HOW EXCITED WE ALL WERE ABOUT IT? MAN, WE ARE REALLY GONNA GET SOME SHIT DONE NOW! AND HOW DID THAT TURN OUT? DID THE DEMS IN THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE PULL THEIR WEIGHT?! NOOOOOOOOOOOO...!

But we have to work within the system. And so does President Obama, unfortunately. How sad it is that so many rejoice in his abrupt collision with reality, and prattle on about his failures to deliver.

Our last best hope is sticking together, even if we have to concede to each other on some things.

There's only one good thing about it: people gather together to watch the games.

A bunch of grown-ass men wearing brightly colored spandex and helmets. An hour-long game in which actual athletic movement accounts for MAYBE a total of 15 minutes. They squat, face each other, yell a little bit, then then they all snap into action for a few seconds before the ball gets handed or thrown to someone. Whoever ends up holding the ball is then knocked down by one or more guys and those guys who knock, drag or throw him down begin to point to the sky in a showy yet meaningless homage to god. After the insincere display of kudos to god, the guy who knocked down the other guy proceeds to strut around the field clenching his fists, dancing, prompting the spectators to admire him in all his testosterone excess, generally soaking in the adulation while the other guys on the field in identical spandex clothes pat him on the butt, hit his helmet with their helmets, jump up in the air and bump chests, and generally congratulate each other on being the toughest, most manly men in the world.

Every once in awhile, one of the guys in spandex kicks, carries, catches or throws the funny looking ball to just the right place on the field and a similar celebration takes place.

People pay a lot of money to watch these men in spandex occasionally move about the field.

These men get paid A LOT of money to run around, hit each other, knock each other down, throw or catch a ball, and occasionally get in fights with each other every week.

A lot of these men have criminal histories: murder, domestic violence, animal abuse, drug possession, drug use and DUIs, among other charges.

And we're supposed to admire, idolize these "men"? I'll take a pass, and I'm sure I won't get paid anything for it.

I've read several of the WikiLeaks cables and I must say they were pretty anticlimactic. Whoever writes those things must have a PhD in soap opera script writing. If I were one of the diplomats, I'd be embarrassed too. Someone actually wrote a very lengthy cable regarding wedding traditions in the Caucasus. I'm came away from the read with the vision of a middle aged fat guy in a Speedo.

I realize that there are more cables to come and Julian is probably saving the "best" for last. But thus far nothing in any of those cables compromises US security. If anything, it makes our government look like a bunch of foolish, sophomoric idiots with too much time on their hands and a suppressed desire to write Harlequin romance novels.

I love the fact that we have WikiLeaks and I hope our government is shaking in its shoes. My only complaint is that most of what's available to read right now regards our State Department and the Obama administration. None of it is damning, but why isn't there more dirt being dished on the Bush years? Maybe those will be the cables revealed in the months to come. I'm sure those cables are pretty juicy.

I'm so tired of having a bulls-eye on my back at that place.

I'm currently mired in rebound depression but working hard to prevent it from getting worse than it is.

The shit that's happened at work is the first thing that pops into my mind when I wake up in the morning. I realize that all I can do is keep working on the EEOC complaint, get rest, take my meds, do something positive and fun (like robo-voting for myself on this week's Caption Challenge), and remind myself that the changes in supervisor and team might open up new opportunities for me to really help overburdened caseworkers.

I don't know which is worse: disappointment in my former supervisor, disappointment in her supervisor, the resurgence of fear that the powers that be once again or still have me in their crosshairs, or the loss of my team--especially Carla and Chelsea. I get so tired of being avoided, disliked, feared at work. I realize a good many coworkers around the building know me well enough to know I'm dependable, smart, funny, etc....but so many others don't. That's why I'm kind of glad I can sit somewhere and just keep to myself.

Somewhere I've got to find a poster that says:

"MENTAL ILLNESS IS AN ILLNESS, NOT A CHARACTER FLAW"

I think the public has a right to know how poorly Adams County mismanages their child protection program. Last night one of my dreams was about being in the elevator with Darwin. We didn't say anything to each other. I have nothing to say to any of them. They are enemies who hate me because I remind them of their bigotry and incompetence. In an agency that pays for mental health treatment and renders major legal decisions based on mental illness, one has to wonder how the subtleties of the court process penalize clients who suffer from mental illness.

For the one or two of you following my story about a toxic work environment, I'm still working on partie deux.

The story continues to grow and I don't even have to do anything but sit and watch the bullshit unfold in front of me. Our job is difficult enough, especially the caseworkers, and I've never understood why the powers that be were so mean and vindictive and confusing in their program administration. I think I'm slowly beginning to realize that most of them are a bunch of vapid, mean, stupid people who will do whatever is necessary to hang on to their jobs, even if that means being unethical.

I'm trying to be very detailed and as unemotional as possible in my narrative because I'm going to submit the narrative to the EEOC.

The thing that bothers me the most is the refusal to acknowledge the fact that I have bipolar disorder. Administration gets more enjoyment out of labeling me a trouble-maker. The example they set with me is the same example they set for workers who have many mentally ill clients. "We'll treat 'em, but we don't like or respect them." " They choose to be that way."

I simply haven't found a way to describe to people how this impacts my ability to work. A young coworker said to me today, "Beth, you have a Master's Degree, why don't you start your own practice?" Of all the good people I work with, I have to say this young man is probably the most understanding. He doesn't think of me as somebody with limited capabilities. I tried to use my highly structured, limited and routine personal life as an analogy to what I need at work.

You know what I want most from the EEOC? I want two things. I want them to tell the powers that be to LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE and I want them to order the county to conduct mental illness sensitivity training and let me be one of the presenters. Probably a pipe dream, I know.

There's so much emphasis on breast cancer screening, treatment and cure--which is a good thing! But many, many more women in the United States will be affected by one or more forms of cardiovascular disease.

I can't help but wonder if some of this is cultural. After all, breast cancer isn't traditionally associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. And breasts are the cornerstone of femininity and female sexuality. We use them to feed our babies and attract men.

Conversely, cardiovascular disease is strongly linked to behavioral and lifestyle choices like smoking and obesity. Many would argue that those are lifestyle choices which can be remedied by not smoking, exercising and eating healthy food.

But is it really that simple?

Cardiovascular disease is rampant in my family. My mother has hypertension; her mother suffered from hypertension and died of stroke at age 76, and her sister died of a stroke in her late 20s. Neither my mother nor my grandmother or aunt are or ever were obese. (My mother, at age 82, is quite slender and always has been.) My grandmother and aunt never smoked cigarettes. My mother smoked cigarettes for about 20 years, but quit when she was 36 years old--cold turkey. My sister, who is 57, is a little overweight but most definitely not obese. She's never smoked cigarettes and I don't know too many people whose diets are healthier than hers. She also has hypertension.

My father has suffered and endured almost every form of acute cardiovascular illness and treatment. My father has never been obese, although he did smoke cigarettes or a pipe until age 50. What led him to stop smoking? He had a heart attack--at age 50--and he's still dealing with heart disease at age 82 (he'll be 83 years old next month). Since that heart attack in 1978: hypertension; congestive heart failure; pacemaker; stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysm; and a couple of angioplasties and stents here and there (he's never had a bypass). With the exception of smoking, my father never engaged in any "lifestyle choice" that made him more vulnerable to cardiovascular disease. He was always very active and robust, and his diet was typical of any member of "The Greatest Generation"--some fried chicken or bacon & eggs sunnyside up now and then, but nothing inordinately unhealthy.

I'm fat and I have high blood pressure. As of yet I haven't had any major cardiovascular events, but I suspect it's only a matter of time. I wish more attention could be directed to women and heart disease, or at least as much as there is for breast cancer awareness.

I'm not a glutton for punishment. I have a job I'm entitled to have, to keep without fear of being belittled or shitcanned for some arbitrary, capricious reason.

Part one of my battle against the powers that be at Adams County.

I’ve been employed with the Adams County Department of Human Services (Colorado, Denver metro area) since December 2001. I began as an intake caseworker, which means my job was to investigate incoming reports of allegations of child abuse and/or neglect. I did this from December 2001 through April 2005. Shortly after I began working for Adams County I informed the person who was my direct supervisor at the time, Joni ******, that I have bipolar disorder. I believed my supervisor needed to know that I had a chronic illness which required regular medication with potential side effects, necessitated time off for medical appointments and therapy, and may become acute which would require time off work to recuperate.

While I was an intake worker, I was subjected to disciplinary action on two different occasions. The first time was because of an e-mail I sent to some of my coworkers and a couple of the supervisors regarding Caucasian, African-American and Latino stereotypes. This occurred in January 2002. The e-mail I forwarded was one I received from a friend of mine who worked for the state at that time. I was given a written reprimand and required to attend sensitivity and sexual harassment training. This also meant I would not receive a merit raise at the time of my next evaluation regardless of my performance throughout the year. I was labeled a bigot. Granted, the e-mail was politically incorrect.

The second disciplinary action occurred as the result of a child fatality. In September 2002, after less than one year on the job and limited experience and training, I investigated a referral in which it was alleged that a child’s ear lobes were bruised as a result of the mother’s boyfriend pulling on or “flicking” her ears as punishment. The allegations were very specific and came from a credible source. I met with the child, her mother and the mother’s boyfriend and observed that the little girl did have bruises on her earlobes and that neither her mother nor her mother’s boyfriend could offer a plausible excuse for how these bruises occurred. I discussed my observations, interview and findings with my supervisor and we agreed that the allegations were founded for physical abuse (the boyfriend) and failure to protect (the mother). The mother had one prior referral regarding abuse/neglect allegations regarding a different child and that referral was not founded. No further action was taken (i.e., emergency removal of the child) because the circumstances didn’t justify or warrant further action. All of this was done with the approval and under the direction of my supervisor.

The mother’s boyfriend had a history of gang involvement but was cooperating with the Aurora Police Department as they conducted investigations regarding gang-related crime.

Four months later, in February 2003, the same little girl was the subject of an open child welfare investigation in Denver County. During the course of the Denver County investigation the little girl died from blunt force trauma to her head and torso.

In between the investigation I completed and the open investigation by Denver County, the mother was shot three times and paralyzed as a result of her wounds. According to the Aurora Police department, the little girl was allegedly cared for by her maternal grandmother while the mother was hospitalized and recuperating.

I was out of town when the little girl’s death was reported on the local news. I found out about her death when a caseworker from Denver County called me the day after it was reported to request records from my investigation. I approached my supervisor and asked her if she knew about the little girl’s death and she told me she had been planning to talk to me about it. She asked me to retrieve the file from our file storage room so she and her supervisor, Kris *************, could review if before sending a copy of the file to Denver County. They reviewed it that day and in the days to come, and also reviewed it with then Division Director Angela *****. All three of them told me they believed the investigation I conducted was appropriate.

I was devastated. I believed, and believe to this day, that I failed in my duty to protect this little girl. As a representative of a child protection agency, it was my responsibility to protect children and having had recent contact with this child and the adults in her life, I failed to do what I could to protect her.

Shortly after the little girl’s death Adams County conducted an internal child fatality review, which is standard operating procedure. This took place in March 2003. My supervisor and I were summoned to meet with our her supervisor/our unit manager (Kris *************) as well as other members of the management team and a representative of the county attorney’s office. When our division director entered the room she asked me if I was nervous and told me I shouldn’t be because I hadn’t done anything wrong. She also said that Denver County was making it very clear that had it not been for Adams County, the little girl would be alive today. She made these comments in the presence of everyone assembled, including me. That statement brought me to tears.

Everyone received several papers to review, presumably paperwork from my investigation. Shortly after everyone began to review these papers the quality services manager (Ralph ********** at that time) and another manager (Pat *******) asked the division director to step into the hall to talk privately for a few minutes. The rest of us remained in the room. When the division director reentered the room with Pat and Ralph, my supervisor and I were asked to leave the room because they needed to discuss some issues without us (me and my supervisor) present. They told us they would reschedule the fatality review for another day.

I was pretty depressed from all of this and feeling very guilty as well. I asked to take some time off (just a few days). While I was off work they rescheduled and conducted the internal fatality review without me. When I returned to work I asked my supervisor how and why they conducted the review without me. She said they scheduled it at a time when everyone could be present. I pointed out that they scheduled and conducted the review without me present and I was probably the person who most needed to be present. My supervisor told me that my presence was unwelcome because of my unprofessional demeanor at the initial review. I asked her what she meant. She said I was unprofessional because I wouldn’t look at anyone. I reminded her I was crying at the time and looking downward. I asked her if there was anything I needed to know about the review and she said there wasn’t.

I believe the state fatality review was conducted May 2003. Prior to that I had contacted the state department of human resources to let them know I was left out of the second internal fatality review, describe what was said and what occurred at the first attempted fatality review, and that I was frustrated with the way the agency (Adams County) was leaving me out of the information loop. The person I spoke to was Susan ****** and she also conducted the state’s fatality review. She asked me to voice my concerns during the state’s fatality review, which I did. Pat ******* sat in the room while Susan interviewed me for the state’s review and when I was done he said “good job”.

The state publicly reported the findings of their fatality review in August 2003. During the period of time between the little girl’s death and the public announcement of the findings (February 2003 through August 2003) I received no additional training or supervisory assistance. There was no disciplinary action during this time period nor was there any input or information regarding how I should conduct investigations. The number of referrals I received for investigation did not decrease.

The day after the state’s fatality review was reported in and on the local news, I was summoned to my supervisor’s office. We met with the door closed. She was present as was her supervisor, Kris *************. They informed me that I was scheduled for a predisciplinary conference with the department director. They informed me I was summoned for this predisciplinary conference because of the inadequate work I did during my investigation regarding the little girl and the bruises on her ear lobes. They informed me that disciplinary measures including and up to termination were possible. My supervisor was scheduled for a similar predisciplinary conference (PDC). I became very upset and asked about the timing of the PDC. I asked my supervisor and her supervisor if I could be fired and they said yes. I asked them why this was just now occurring, as six months had passed and I continued to receive referrals and conduct investigations without further training or assistance, and had not been subjected to any disciplinary action after the internal fatality review. They told me they didn’t know and gave me a letter telling me when I was scheduled to meet with the department director. I asked why this was happening to me because I did what was required per state law and my supervisor’s guidance. I told them I relied heavily on her guidance because I was still so inexperienced. Joni said just tell them you’re inexperienced and that I didn’t adequately supervise you. I told them I was going to go home and kill myself by overdosing on medication, and that I would leave a note for my son encouraging him to sue the county. My supervisor and her supervisor told me they couldn’t let me leave if I was threatening to hurt myself. I told them I wasn’t going to hurt myself and said that because I was incredibly upset and didn’t know what to do. I told them I wanted to go home because of how I was feeling and stayed home from work for a few days.

No matter how bad any of this has been or will be for me, nothing is as bad as what happened to that little girl. Her death will be on my conscience for the rest of my life. I will always believe there must have been something I could have done to prevent her death. I accept responsibility for failing her.

At the PDC I was asked why I made the choices I made during the investigation. I was also asked why I threatened to commit suicide in the presence of my coworkers. I told the department director I didn’t threaten to commit suicide in the presence of my coworkers and then told him “great, so I suppose they’ve told you I have bipolar disorder.” He said no one told him I had bipolar disorder and to disregard what he said/asked.

When the meeting with the department director was over I met with the county’s main HR person, Jane *******. I asked her why, after six months with no assistance or training or any kind of adjustment to my job, was I just now being reprimanded for my work on the case in question? I asked her why, if I’d done such a poor job, the county hadn’t required me to participate in any additional training or hadn’t given me additional supervisory assistance? I asked why, in the six months that had passed since the initial review, no one had helped me try to do my job better? I told her I’d been an intake caseworker for less than a year when I did the investigation in question and was still very inexperienced, and I needed additional supervisory input and assistance. I asked her why, if my casework was so questionable as to warrant today’s PDC, did I continue to receive the same number and type of referrals to investigate in the last six months? She told me the county wanted to wait until the state issued its findings before they decided whether or not disciplinary action was in order. She said the same regarding additional training. Lastly, she told me that perhaps the type of work I do is not compatible with having bipolar disorder and I should consider finding a different job.

Both my supervisor and I were suspended without pay for a week. I could have appealed that decision but my supervisor didn’t and at that time I was truly unfamiliar with the whole concept of appealing disciplinary action. I was just glad I didn’t get fired because that’s what I thought was going to happen to me. When I returned to my office I was summoned into Kris **************s office. She asked me about the PDC. She told me the department director had already called her and told her it was his impression I would be relieved just to not be fired. She also told me “You know they did this to make the county look good”, or something to that effect. I was the scapegoat.

I continued to receive regular therapeutic/psychiatric treatment with Debbie Neisen (LCSW) and Dr. John Young. I sought secondary trauma counseling with David Conrad at The Kempe Center after some coworkers suggested I try it. My supervisor never recommended secondary trauma counseling nor did anyone else at Adams County except my coworkers.

I was summoned to testify at the mother’s criminal trial—I can’t remember if this was September 2003 or September 2004. I think it was 2003. The Denver ADA called me and told me she was going to subpoena me. I let my supervisor know the Denver DA’s office had contacted me. At no time did anyone from Adams County offer legal support or assistance to help me prepare my testimony for the criminal trial (Denver workers received assistance from Denver county attorneys). I'd never testified before at a criminal trial.

About one year later, there was a broadcast of the trial for a reality show; I was unaware I was being filmed. I think the name of the show was “The Jury Room” and I think that initial broadcast was the only one. Coworkers saw it, I didn’t, I didn’t know about it, but Kris was sure I did (“how could she not see cameras?”). Coworkers called me a movie star, even Angela *****; I told them it was inappropriate for them to joke about it and there was nothing funny about any of it, that I had not seen the broadcast and never would watch it. I was at a joint meeting with our paired team which was supervised by Karen ******--her team and our team. After the meeting was over everyone asked me about it, said I was on TV last night, and I told them I didn’t know what they were talking about. They sat me down in the hall by the elevator and told me about the show, said it made me look really bad. Kris wanted to know if I knew I was being filmed because if I knew and didn’t tell anybody I would have been violating the county’s policy re: the media. Joni told me that she told Kris it was unlikely I knew the taping was occurring based on my reaction when they told me about the show. I contacted the Denver DA’s office to ask why they didn’t tell me the trial was going to be videotaped for a reality TV show. The man I spoke with told me they weren’t required to tell me and he also stated I must have seen the cameras in the court room. Lastly, he told me the Denver workers and their attorneys knew the trial was being videotaped and asked me why my county’s attorney didn’t tell me.

All of this is a matter of public record, so I’m not breaching anyone’s confidentiality. I've deleted the last names of people simply because I don't want to do anything that would give any of them even the slightest chance to retaliate because I'm blogging about this.

My supervisor Joni was transferred to ongoing supervisory job in December 2004 (still with Adams County); she remains in that position to this day. The team I was on remained intact and was assigned a new supervisor except for me; I was reassigned to Liz ******, a supervisor who would later be moved to an ongoing caseworker position (unknown if demoted or her choice) shortly before she retired/quit. I was told I was moved to this team because of my expertise, skill, experience, that it was a weak team, they needed some strength on the team and I could provide some strength. Of all the workers on Joni’s team., my team, I had been there the shortest time and was the least experienced (i.e., Julie *******, Rick *********).

Liz was a supervisor who made me very uncomfortable; I didn’t feel safe as a caseworker. I didn't believe that her guidance and supervision of my work was safe for me. I complained about this to Kris ************* and she told me the decision was final (for me to be assigned to that team). Liz wanted to know personal information about me and once insisted on seeing FMLA paperwork from my doctor that was intended for HR only. In fact, she refused to sign the supervisor’s portion of the FMLA paperwork unless I allowed her to see the paperwork for HR. I had to ask HR to tell her she was not allowed to see the paperwork in question and have them direct her to sign her portion of the paperwork. Liz was not a safe, supportive supervisor. She didn’t know basic aspects of the job, such as the procedure to secure a judge’s hold to take children into custody. She didn't have consistent case understanding or judgment. At times she paged me in the middle of an interview and told me to stop so I could respond to a new referral she’d just assigned to me. She regularly gave me a new referral to investigate late on Friday afternoons after she’d been holding on to the referral since that morning. If I worked late (10pm and later), she still expected me to be at work by 8am even if I didn’t have anything I needed to do that early in the day. Liz ****** was my supervisor for about four-five months before I decided I just couldn’t continue to work for her.

In addition to being stuck with an inadequate supervisor, over the course of time I eventually determined that the nature of this work was very detrimental to my health and I requested a change in my job duties. In late March 2005, I asked to speak with Kris ************* privately. I told her I could no longer handle the stress of working in intake and wanted to move to a different position within the agency. Kris personally escorted me to the Human Services building where clients apply for TANF, Medicaid and Food Stamps (among other benefits). The supervisors Kris and I met with said it was very unusual to have a unit manager escort a caseworker to meet with other supervisors to inquire about a job change. After this meeting I told Kris I didn’t want to do work assigning benefits, that I wanted to work with people but in a more predictable, less stressful setting, and asked if I could be reassigned to the Case Aide team, which had an vacant position. Case Aides work directly with clients on site. They facilitate and supervise court ordered visits between caregivers and children who have been separated because of child abuse/neglect.

So I heard this new phrase today, courtesy Rachel Maddow. Guess I shoulda heard this before but I've been tuning a lot out lately, so some good stuff is bound to get missed. Like I didn't even know about the President's speech today in Madison until it was over, and then I was scrambling to find out what it was about and why so many were inspired by it.

Seems that every time I perch myself at my 'puter and attempt to collect my thoughts and register them on my blog, my mind goes blank. I'm trying to so hard to keep up with life and work is just beating me down. I just want to be respected at work, provided with a healthy work environment, and encouraged to do the good work I know I do but nobody will admit. I'll work without a raise, I might even work some overtime without actually getting paid overtime pay, but I'm not going to kill myself for an employer who treats me (and all of my coworkers) like shit.

So, lotsa people people at work punching this old hippie. I'm tired of punching back. I've been in the boxing ring for months and I'm worn down. I'm tired of being the default Norma Rae for my meek coworkers. I'm afraid I've backed myself into a corner with them and they think I can somehow preserve sanity for them--at work. I can't do it! I can barely hang onto it for myself.

I just want to be left alone and allowed to do the work I'm good at--doing. That's all.

The atmosphere is toxic because of the lack of ethical, respectful and knowledgeable "leadership".

They tell us to encourage families to be open and honest and not keep secrets.

Their supervisory principles consist of sneaking around, aiming for people they don't like, and taking the shot.

They lie.

They react.

They have a vision statement but no vision.

They have a mission statement but no real idea what their mission is.

They blame.

They engage in illegal conduct.

And people wonder why I hate it there so much.

I feel like a sellout. I am a sellout. If I had any REAL balls I'd walk out of that place and never look back. I've always landed on my feet before. But I seem to have lost my nerve.

So I went to my doctor today and she blew me away

I went to my doctor today because I've had a constant headache for almost three weeks. I have no idea what's causing it, but I do know the constant pain is wearing on me and at this point I'm not sure which is worse--the fatigue or the pain. Anyway, my doctor apparently had an axe to grind with the makers of Tylenol because all she did was bitch about how I'm ruining my liver because I'm taking too much Tylenol.

I'm not going back to her again. For anything. Which means at the age of 50 I've now gotta build a relationship with a new primary care doctor.

I don't think our nation's health care problem is just about insurance. I think we have shitty health care providers.

Here's the text of the e-mail I sent to her a short time ago:

Martha Ives has been my primary care physician for approximately 8 1/2
years.

Martha, I made an appointment to see you today because I've been in
non-stop pain (headache) for the past two to three weeks.  I've been
over and over a laundry list of possible causes and solutions.  I wrote
down a list of all of my symptoms, when they occurred, what seemed to
help, what didn't, and several questions I had for you.  I even got so
far as to pull the list out of my purse and hold it in my lap in
anticipation of being able to have a well-rounded discussion with you.
We never got to the questions I had for you and we certainly never
discussed how worried I am about how I've been feeling and how much the
constant pain and fatigue have drained me.  The second or third question
you asked me was regarding what I had been doing or taking to alleviate
the pain.  I told you that I'd been taking three acetaminophen tablets
every four hours and it was at that point you lost whatever concern you
had for me as a human being and instead turned your attention to what I
can only assume is a soap box issue for you.  You continued to chastise
me about my overuse of acetaminophen and mocked my concern for how I've
been feeling by asking me if I thought I had a brain tumor.  It was at
that precise moment that I realized I could no longer address this or
any other medical issue with you.

You also encouraged me to go to the nearest emergency room and request a
CT scan or get a second opinion if I didn't like what you were telling
me.  When I told you I don't like to take prescription pain killers
because they interfere with my psychotropic medication, you repeatedly
asked me why I was refusing your treatment suggestions/impeding your
ability to help me, and again invited me to get a second opinion.  You
didn't even take the time to notice that my blood pressure reading was
high today, even though you've been treating me for hypertension all of
the years I've been your patient.

Before you entered the exam room, I could hear you talking in the hall
to someone about how it used to be with doctors and patients-- that
patients just did what their doctors told them to do, and that no one
had respect for the patients "back then".  You treated me very
disrespectfully today; your lack of compassion and professionalism was a
complete surprise to me.  I know my body.  I know when something isn't
quite right.  My headache may be due to nothing more than tension at
work, but I am miserable and in need of help.  You did not help me
today.  You did not do your job properly.  Your demeanor with me today
was unacceptable and I won't return to you as a patient; after what
occurred today I no longer trust you.

First of all, let me point out/remind/state emphatically I do not believe in a literal god, at least not the god all those lunatics claim to pray to every fucking day of the week (and especially on weekends). I'm a true agnostic in that I want to believe but just don't know what to believe. A scientist by nature and education, I'm inclined toward empirical evidence and away from the supernatural and unproven. I believe in the power of faith, but not in the power of god--any god.

That having been said, I find myself drawn lately to the predictions of the end times, the end of the world, 12/21/12. Now, I don't believe the world is going to end on that day, or any other day. In spite of my yearning to ditch my student loan debt via the end of the world, I don't think the mountains and seas are going to crash in on us and we're all going to die. Or, if you believe the RWNJs, we sinners will die while the believers will ascend to heaven via "the rapture". Which, by the way, if that happens I want at least one or two of their cars. As I ditch my student loan debt.

It just seems like an overabundance of really bad things are happening all at the same time. The floods in Tennessee, the oil rig volcano a mile down in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, Catholic priests preying on children, the world economy in a shitstorm, the teabaggers threatening to kill liberals and our president, some asshole trying to set off a bomb in Times Square (Really? How stupid was that dude? Seriously...that thing wouldn't have blown up if someone put TNT under it and blew up the TNT.)...

So I'm thinking the age of enlightenment. Is stuff gonna just get so shitty that we all collectively just say "Hey, this is bullshit. We can do better than this."?

I think that will be the apocalypse, in its true meaning. Everything will just get so shitty that everyone is going to stop being an asshole. That's what I want to believe.
